What You Need to Know About Erectile Dysfunction and Coronavirus
Sexual health alert for men in Arizona! Studies have found that one of the long-term effects of COVID-19 infection is erectile dysfunction!
There were rumors early on in the pandemic that COVID-19 could cause sterility in men, that has proven NOT to be the case. However, it turns out that it can impact sexual health in another way. Current research suggests that COVID-19 can cause erectile dysfunction.
A recent study published by the Royal Society found that some men who had a fever with coronavirus later were found to have testicle tissue damage.
High fevers such as those associated with the coronavirus can cause a condition known as “orchitis,” which is marked swelling of the testicles.
The Royal Society study was looking into the anecdotal reports of COVID reducing semen volume and causing infertility. The study concluded that COVID-related orchitis did not appreciably reduce sperm count in those in the trial, but it could have caused erectile dysfunction.
Dr. Emmanuele A. Jannini, Full Professor of Endocrinology & Medical Sexology at the Department of Systems Medicine at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, has worked on several studies looking at the long-term effects of COVID-19 on male sexual health.
One of Jannini’s studies published in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation also indicated that orchitis was a possible complication of COVID-19.
Jannini said COVID-19 does not seem to affect men’s reproductive health in the way of fertility as much as it does in the sense of erectile dysfunction.
“The male reproductive function [fertility] seems not so dramatically affected by both COVID-19, the therapy of COVID-19, the vaccination, and so on,” Jannini told London paper The Sun. “We do not have so many strong reasons to believe that there is a possible effect of the virus, of the infection, of the consequences of infection into the male ability to reproduce,” he added.
Later studies, such as the one recently published by the Royal Society, seem to support Jannini’s position that COVID does not necessarily impact a man’s ability to father a child, but it can indeed impact his ability to get or maintain an erection.
Another study published by Jannini as recently as July of 2020 found that there is a link between COVID-19 infection, particularly in men that may have “comorbidities” or preexisting conditions that already predispose them for ED.
Jannini told The Sun that many of the men in his studies who developed ED after being diagnosed with COVID-19 had preexisting conditions or risk factors that cause erectile dysfunction – like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancers, or other conditions, even if they were not having ED issues before coming down with COVID.
Jannini said that It’s difficult to say if erectile dysfunction is specifically caused by a COVID infection or if it appears primarily because it’s more linked with preexisting conditions that could have been made worse due to COVID.
He said his research also showed that the link between COVID-19 and erectile dysfunction went both ways. He found that men who had ED prior to contracting COVID-19 had worse cases and more severe symptoms. Again, it is hard to pinpoint what the cause and effect may be here, but Jannini and other researchers speculate that the preexisting conditions such as heart disease and diabetes that are often associated with ED put the body in a more vulnerable position when it is exposed to the COVID virus.
“We are figuring out that definitely, people may be with erectile dysfunction after [ sever COVID infection] – even if they are healthy before,” he said.
More data and research are needed on these links. However, Jannini said, as he emphasized, that his observations and research are in their earliest phases.

“I was getting headaches and other side effects from Viagra. Plus, I hated the idea of not being ready “in the moment” and having to take a pill in advance of potential sexual activity. That all changed when I saw Dr. Boris at Original Health Institute. Dr. B. recommended GainsWAVE therapy, and man, was it the right choice for me. The procedure was painless, and I tell you, I was “ready to go” that very evening, and every other time the mood was right ever since my treatment.
